    In May 2019, Tahir Upshaw walked across the stage at ÍøºìÍ·Ìõ’s Commencement to earn his degree in mechanical engineering, a culminating moment after years of personal sacrifices and perseverance. Despite early setbacks in his academic career, Upshaw relished in earning his degree, in part, because of the community he built at ÍøºìÍ·Ìõand through the mentorship of faculty in the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SPCEET). He has turned that experience into a fruitful career as an integration engineer and tech lead at Emory Healthcare, where he has contributed to innovative healthcare technology projects.

A science teacher in DeKalb County Schools, Thomas is now a ‘Triple Owl,’ having previously earned a master's and education specialist degree in instructional technology, and now a Doctor of Education in Instructional Technology. So for her, KSU – in particular, the Clarice C. and Leland H. Bagwell College of Education – felt like home.

    When Luis Calvo ’10 left Barranquilla, Colombia, at 18 to study architecture, he envisioned himself designing buildings. Little did the College of Architecture and Construction Management (CACM) alumnus know that he’d be designing entire city centers, guiding one of the most ambitious redevelopment efforts in metro Atlanta. Since earning his Bachelor of Architecture from the former Southern Polytechnic State University, Calvo has gone on to become an associate principal and Atlanta studio lead for the urban planning and design firm MKSK, overseeing projects that shape communities across the Southeast and Midwest.

    ÍøºìÍ·Ìõ alumnus Marc Feuerbach ‘07, who is Cartersville City Schools Superintendent, will represent Georgia at the national level in February at the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) meeting in Nashville. Named 2026 Superintendent of the Year recently by the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) and Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA), Feuerbach is the state’s nominee for National Superintendent of the Year, an honor the AASA will announce Feb. 12.
