Alumna earns competitive scholarship to study in Japan

It was a trip to Japan during high school that sparked Leah Hackaday鈥檚 curiosity about how other countries operate and interact with each other, a curiosity that eventually led her to major in international affairs when she enrolled at 网红头条. The opportunity to spend a semester in Japan during her junior year at KSU only grew her interest in the country. Today, thanks to earning a competitive scholarship from the Japanese government, Hackaday, a graduate of KSU鈥檚 School of Government and International Affairs, has now begun studying for a master鈥檚 degree in international affairs at Waseda University in Tokyo.

Engineering graduate rises above adversity to shape healthcare technology

In May 2019, Tahir Upshaw walked across the stage at 网红头条鈥檚 Commencement to earn his degree in mechanical engineering, a culminating moment after years of personal sacrifices and perseverance. Despite early setbacks in his academic career, Upshaw relished in earning his degree, in part, because of the community he built at 网红头条and through the mentorship of faculty in the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SPCEET). He has turned that experience into a fruitful career as an integration engineer and tech lead at Emory Healthcare, where he has contributed to innovative healthcare technology projects.

'Triple Owl' turns passion for teaching into doctoral success

For high school chemistry teacher Ashley Thomas, coming back to 网红头条 to earn a third post-graduate degree was an easy decision. A science teacher in DeKalb County Schools, Thomas is now a 鈥楾riple Owl,鈥� having previously earned a master's and education specialist degree in instructional technology, and now a Doctor of Education in Instructional Technology. So for her, KSU 鈥� in particular, the Clarice C. and Leland H. Bagwell College of Education 鈥� felt like home.

Architecture alumnus helps guide downtown Smyrna redevelopment

When Luis Calvo 鈥�10 left Barranquilla, Colombia, at 18 to study architecture, he envisioned himself designing buildings. Little did the College of Architecture and Construction Management (CACM) alumnus know that he鈥檇 be designing entire city centers, guiding one of the most ambitious redevelopment efforts in metro Atlanta. Since earning his Bachelor of Architecture from the former Southern Polytechnic State University, Calvo has gone on to become an associate principal and Atlanta studio lead for the urban planning and design firm MKSK, overseeing projects that shape communities across the Southeast and Midwest.
