The HMI Hackathon – Coding Today for the Health of Tomorrow is a statewide, in-person innovation competition bringing together undergraduate and graduate students from across Georgia to develop AI-driven solutions to real-world healthcare challenges. Through interdisciplinary teamwork, mentorship from industry and academic leaders, and live pitching, students will explore how artificial intelligence can improve patient outcomes, healthcare operations, and health equity—all while networking and competing for prizes.

What You Can Win

A panel of judges will evaluate each pitch, awarding the following prizes:

1st Place: Meta Quest VR Headset (per person)
2nd Place: Sony Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones (per person)
3rd Place: Portable External 2TB Hard Drive (per person)

Who Can Participate?

The HMI Hackathon is open to all students from across all colleges and universities in Georgia. Undergraduate and graduate students from any discipline are welcome, especially those with interest in healthcare, AI, or data analytics. No prior experience required, just curiosity and teamwork.

 

Hackathon Judging Criteria

Judges Will Score Each of the Following Categories on a scale of 1 to 5.
1 = Poor | 3 = Good | 5 = Excellent

  1. Problem & Need: Judges evaluate how clearly the team defines the problem.
    Is the problem important?
    Is there a clear target user or stakeholder?
    Does the team explain why this issue matters?

  2. Innovation & Solution: Judges assess the creativity and originality of the idea.
    Is the solution thoughtful and well-designed?
    Does it realistically address the identified problem?

  3. Prototype / Demo: Judges look at what the team built or demonstrated.
    Did the team show a working prototype, mockup, or functional concept?
    Is the solution understandable and usable?

  4. Impact & Feasibility: Judges evaluate real-world potential.
    Could this solution work outside the Hackathon?
    Does it create value for users, organizations, or communities?
    Is it realistic to implement?

  5. Presentation: Judges assess communication and professionalism.
    Was the presentation clear and organized?
    Did the team explain their idea confidently?
    Did they answer questions effectively?

All students who want to participate in the HMI Hackathon should register by February 20, 2026.

Participants will compete in teams between three and five students. We welcome individual participants, though they will be assigned to teams prior to the event by the HMI Team.

All Team members must complete their own registration.
