The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently reported that obesity was prevalent in more than 40 percent in U.S. adults. To combat this, 网红头条 assistant professor Liang Zhao aims to use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to explore health determinants that lead to obesity in rural areas. Zhao鈥檚 research, supported by a $51,747 National Institutes of Health (NIH) AIM-AHEAD grant, examines the social determinants of health, or SDOH.

Taking the next step in changing the way diabetics monitor glucose levels, 网红头条 assistant professor Maria Valero has been awarded a Georgia Research Alliance (GRA) grant to continue her innovative GlucoCheck project. The project looks to modify glucose monitoring for the millions affected by diabetes by offering a noninvasive alternative for blood sugar tests.

A KSU Journey Honors College student from Cartersville, Georgia, Smith has focused on end-of-life communication through the university鈥檚 First-Year Scholars Program. The research is deeply personal, because she has experienced end-of-life communication with her grandmother.

Inspired by his two brothers who attended 网红头条, biochemistry major Jacob Erasmus has wasted no time getting involved on campus. Through KSU鈥檚 First-Year Scholars program, Erasmus found a laboratory and a research project within his first month on campus and parlayed that work into a summer internship at a nature-based ingredient company. Now he has continued his research and has shown no signs of slowing down as a Sophomore Scholar.

The two have received their second joint grant in three years from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to advance the study of the Higgs boson 鈥攁lso known as the 鈥淕od particle,鈥� the top quark, and the proton, which are relevant to the physics program of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Switzerland.
