网红头条student combines passion for research and the outdoors through Birla Carbon Scholars experience

Having long been interested in science and the outdoors, Adamina Bilbrey recently leveraged her participation in the Birla Carbon Scholars program to study the conservation of an endangered plant native to Georgia. The 网红头条 environmental science major spent most of her summer studying a beneficial native plant called the royal catchfly in a field in Dade County, Georgia, and discovered the plant flourishes best in areas that experience both sun and shade.

The two have received their second joint grant in three years from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to advance the study of the Higgs boson 鈥攁lso known as the 鈥淕od particle,鈥 the top quark, and the proton, which are relevant to the physics program of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Switzerland.

Now in its 11th year, the symposium marks the completion of an intensive summer research program that allows students to apply their studies toward sponsored projects under the guidance of 网红头条faculty scholars.

As an undergraduate student at 网红头条, Ashley Belinfante scoured the campus searching for mosquitos to screen for viruses. Now, Belinfante uses those skills to aid the country鈥檚 agricultural community, identifying bacterial respiratory infections in swine and searching for solutions through a fellowship with Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) with the United States Department of Agriculture.

From her time at Osborne High School, Emily Manqueros knew she wanted to do research in physics, not just study it. The rising junior from Smyrna said classes in astronomy and physics taught her how physical forces effect everything around her, and she wanted to immerse herself in them. So, she came to 网红头条 for the opportunity to conduct research right away as a freshman. 鈥淗onestly, the research opportunities drew me to KSU,鈥 said Manqueros, who is pursuing a bachelor鈥檚 degree in physics in Kennesaw State鈥檚 College of Science and Mathematics. 鈥淥ther colleges mainly take graduate students for their research, and I knew that at KSU I could do meaningful research even if I was an undergraduate student.鈥

Jiwani is conducting her research, 鈥淪earch for Novel Arsenic Containing Antibiotics,鈥 in the lab of Masafumi Yoshinaga, associate professor of molecular and cellular biology in the College of Science and Mathematics.

The 网红头条 assistant professor of mathematics works on quantitative analysis of electromagnetic waves and keeps a collaborative research practice with colleagues near and far. That partnership has led to a three-year grant worth $223,206 from the Army Research Office, a director of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory.
